IN THIS LESSON

Learn about the case studies of allergy and auto-immune responses after getting Breast Implants.

breast implant illness

There have been many reports of allergy and auto-immune responses after getting Breast Implants. I believe it is important to look at other women's stories and learn about their experiences.

In this lesson, we will mostly focus on studied cases of Breast Implant Allergy and Auto-immune responses.

Unusual skin reaction to silicone content in Breast Implants

BACKGROUND:
"A patient who had a long history of unsuccessful insertion and extraction of various implants, some of which were filled with silicone gel, others with saline, had widespread skin lesions which, it is believed, were due to leakage from the implant."

RESULTS:

"A cutaneous test with material from various implants, such as the gel content and the shells, caused a prolonged inflammatory response, which was difficult to classify as being either irritative or allergic."

CONCLUSIONS:

"We believe that the patient's complications are due to an unusual host response to silicone."(1)

This patient developed skin lesions and inflammation following Breast Implant surgery. This study was about testing her immune system reaction to both silicone and saline implants. The researchers concluded her reaction was due to her exposure to silicone from both implants (including the shell).

IgG Autoantibodies in Silicone Breast Implants

BACKGROUND:
"The association between symptomatic women with Silicone Breast Implants (SBI) and dysregulated immunity (auto-immune) was in dispute for decades. In this study, we describe for the first time the activity of IgG antibodies taken from symptomatic women with SBIs (suffering from symptoms), and healthy women. The IgG antibodies from each group were injected into mice brains."

RESULTS:

"We found that IgGs, taken from symptomatic women with SBIs, dysregulate inflammatory cytokines (autoimmune response), compared to healthy-women IgGs."

CONCLUSIONS:

"We urge for the increased awareness of this and for the possibility to screen for potential anti-IgG antibodies in patents with suspected autoimmune dysautonomia (nervous system disorders)."

"Importantly, we recently found an elevated risk for developing autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, and sarcoidosis[ 9 ] in women with SBIs. In line with the cited paper, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) updated its last 'box warning' against SBIs and stated that patients receiving SBIs have reported a variety of systemic symptoms, including autoimmune diseases [ 10 ]."

Functional IgG Autoantibodies against Autonomic Nervous System Receptors in Symptomatic Women with Silicone Breast Implants. Cells. 2023; 12(11):1510. https://doi.org/10.3390/cells12111510

In this study, they took cultures and blood work from women with Silicone Breast Implants (SBIs) and women-without Breast Implants.

They compared the immune-response of each group by injecting the blood samples into mice. The researchers found that the cells of the SBI group had an autoimmune response in the mice, while the cells of the group without-implants had no negative effects.

It was also recommended to screen patients for this IgG response before getting Breast Implants. The study mentioned the FDA ' black box warning' and the potential risk of getting autoimmune diseases after Breast Implant surgery.

Final Thoughts

It is important to study the Auto-immune and Allergy responses to Breast Implants. My experience with implants is very similar to those in the studies. I had rashes, autoimmune, and allergy responses until my Breast Implants were removed.

There is a debate whether saline vs silicone implants is a safer choice. This information is for you to determine what is best for you. The shell of both saline and silicone implants have chemicals that could break down over time according to studies and FDA literature.

If you are planning on getting Breast Implants, I would suggest getting testing for IgE auto-antibody responses. According to researchers, this may give you and your doctor a good idea if you will react to Breast Implants or not.
